Every DEF CON event has a theme, and this year’s theme is “Engage”.

DEF CON 32 is themed around the concept of fixing what’s broken about the internet in 2024. The services we rely on every day are becoming more expensive, more intrusive and less useful all the time. More than that, they’re luring us into a cul-de-sac of walled gardens with no respect for the transparency, open standards and resilience that make the internet great.

But the app lords don’t have to get the final say. We are hackers, after all. What can we, as a global community of clever, curious, hack-inclined humans, do to stop the encroaching ‘Enshittification” of our digital commons?

For starters, where there are some cool open alternatives, we should use and support them. We should invite others. Where the alternatives are lacking, we can take a cue from cDc and roll our own. When the policies that govern the future of the net are being discussed, we can make sure we’re there and getting ourselves heard.

Of course, we still want fresh hacks, cool war stories and deep, warranty-shattering dives into tech. But if your proposal includes a way to make the net into a more free, open and accessible place you’re going to get special consideration. If you’re proposing concrete ways for people to get involved, even better.
